The OptimisSport Distance Swim Challenge will be held in the Santa Monica Bay on Sunday, August 19th. This year participants swim to raise funds for charities that promote healthy and active lifestyles for children and adults while increasing awareness of drowning rates among minority youth and the need to make swim lessons more available. Net proceeds from the event will go to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, American Heart Association Los Angeles and Exceeding Expectations.
OptimisSport recognized that companies spend significant time and money to reduce healthcare costs, improved employee loyalty and productivity all while creating an overall healthier work environment. With that in mind, OptimisSport created the DELTA Wellness Challenge which allows companies to reduce both the time and the money invested in these programs while increasing the effectiveness and overall results.
OptimisSport utilized their extensive expertise in both event planning and the science of movement and function to develop the DELTA Wellness Challenge. The challenge uses cutting edge mobile applications, evidence based training tools, performance related nutritional guidance, and celebrity athletes to motivate and train employees to achieve fitness goals that may seem unachievable. What makes this challenge so unique is that the scoring rewards those employees who make the greatest impact on their health by reducing their risk for a cardiovascular event. The difference of this program over any other is how it directly targets the employees within a company whom are in the most need of a lifestyle change and positions them to be company ?heroes?.
Former NFL player, current ESPN analyst, and ESPNLA Radio host Marcellus Wiley?s heroic personal journey of learning to swim in 11 weeks and then completing a 1.2-mile open water swim has brought the event both local and national coverage on ESPN, CNN and Oprah Radio. Marcellus has said that his training for the swim was one of the hardest and most physically taxing things he has ever done, and that swimming the 1.2-miles was like playing an entire season in the NFL in one day.
Marcellus? drive to be a positive role model for both children and African Americans as it relates to water safety has driven him to bring on additional voices to help. Marcellus and his friends, NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice and two time gold medalist and former captain of the USA Women?s Soccer Team Julie Foudy, will be joined by hundreds of swimmers and the thousands in attendance in promoting Marcellus? vision that ?Swimming is not just a recreational activity or a great source of physical conditioning?. it is also an activity that saves lives.?
