– A more netbook-like MacBook Air may be in the works by Apple, as well as a new iPod Touch, with both likely to be released later this year, according to an analyst’s report.
The MacBook Air, which now has a 13.3-inch display, would have an 11.6-inch screen and use Intel’s ultra-low voltage processor, according to Mingchi Kuo, senior analyst at Digitimes Research, told Taiwanese publication DigiTimes. The current MacBook Air comes with either an 1.86 GHz or 2.13GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

The 3-pound laptop was released in early 2008, when netbooks were few and far between. But the MacBook Air’s pricing – starting at $1,799 at that time, and now at $1,499 – is about $1,000 more than many netbooks, which have become popular.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs, not a netbook fan, said in 2008 that the company would not “know how to make a $500 computer that’s not a piece of junk, and our DNA will not let us ship that.”
The new iPod Touch will have a camera – something lacking in the current model – that can record both photos and video, Kuo said, and the camera will be 3 megapixels. The device will also use Apple’s own A4 processor, now in the iPhone 4 and the iPad.
While shipments of the MacBook Air may total 400,000 this year, he said, iPod Touch shipments may reach 18 million units.
