Peacekeepers from Nepal have been accused by some Haitians for bringing the cholera to Haiti for the first time in a century but the cholera strain has been matched to South Asia. There has been no evidence to justify the accusation the UN says.
Violent protests against the UN peacekeepers caused the UN troops to fire tear gas to disperse demonstrators throwing stones and blocking roads in Cap Haitian .The protesters set up burning barricades and torched a police station while hundreds of Haitians threw stones at UN peacekeepers.
During the clashes 10 people were injured and there were some unconfirmed reports of shots fired. The demonstrators accused the government of leaving the people to die and were calling for the UN peace givers to leave.
The cholera epidemic has killed more than 900 people and is now present in all of Haiti’s providences. Nigel Fisher the UN humanitarian co-coordinator for Haiti said, the demonstrations showed the cholera outbreak has gone beyond a health crisis and has become an issue of national security.
