The social networking site Twitter has been subpoenaed by the government in an effort to obtain personal details of people connected to Wikileaks including user names, connection records, telephone numbers and payment details.

The Twitter executives are in a very difficult position as their forte with Twitter is to promote a forum for free expression  ,and continue to comply with local laws especially when it comes down to tracking criminals. The US Attorney’s Office in a court order issued on December 14 by the District court for the Eastern District of Virginia  ,has provided evidence to show that the information that Twitter has is relevant and material to an ongoing investigation. Some possible charges against Mr Assange that are being examined by the US are the leaking of 250,000 classified diplomatic cables. Mr Assange may be charged with conspiring to steal documents with Private First Class Bradley Manning, a US Army intelligence analyst , the Department of Justice may seek to indict him on these charges.

If proven guilty Mr Manning is facing court martial and up to 52 years in prison for his allegedly sending Wilileaks the diplomatic cables and military logs about events that occurred in Afghanistan and Iraq plus a classified military video . Julian Assange the Wikileaks founder ,is presently trying to avoid extradition from UK to Sweden
