Illnesses caused by inhaling the pulverized remnants of the twin towers have more than 10,000 people suing the city and a lengthy list of other companies that have handled the massive clean up of lower Manhattan after the 9/11 attacks.
Over exposure to the toxic dust of The World Trade Center have prompter thousands of laborers, police officers and fire fighters to sue New York City for damages that could ultimately pay them as much as $815 million. They have until Monday to decide weather to join in the legal settlement.
With Monday’s deadline looming on the most important of several related settlements ,90 percent of those eligible had said yes to the deal but a lot of people seen to be making a last minute decision. At least 95 per cent of the plaintiffs must comply to participate for the settlement to become effective.
The deadline of Monday technically applies only to a settlement between Napoli’s legal team and the city’s attorneys in the spring . Based on the severity of the illness and the likelihood they could be linked to the 9/11 attacks, the deal would distribute as much as $712 million among the workers. Trying to prove that common illnesses like cancer was caused by the trade center dust will prove to be difficult.
