A section of wall surrounding an ancient Roman house at Pompeii has collapsed due to rain. The site of Pompeii is located in western Italy in a region called Campania, near the Bay of Naples,With the coast to the west and the Apennine Mountains to the east.

Pompeii was first occupied in the 8th century BC.  The Etruscans soon dominated the region and Pompeii was no exception.  The Etruscan occupation lasted throughout the 5th and 6th centuries BC.  After the Etruscans came the Saminites.

The Saminites turned Pompeii into a pure Greek town.  Their reign ended when the Romans took control of Pompeii around 200 BC.  The Romans retained control over Pompeii until the end, a fateful day in 79 AD when Mt Vesuvius unleashed its fury on the 20,000 inhabitants of this thriving Roman city.

The wall surrounding an ancient Roman house at Pompeiiis is the second structure to fall there in less than a month. The house itself was not affected by the collapse and the wall was not ancient. It was built after World War II to repair the original structure, which had been bombed in the conflict.

It is made of mortar, tuffo stone and was part of a perimeter area of the house complex, which is also known as the House of Epidius Hymenaeus. Pompeii lay buried for nearly 1,700 years,it was found during an excavation that began on March 23, 1748.

It was preserved under 9 feet of volcanic ash and frozen in time From that date on, excavations at Pompeii have continued sporadically. Portions of the site remain uncovered, and excavation and research teams are still attempting to reveal this mysterious city’s secrets.
