Republicans have won control of the House of Representatives on Tuesday this also expanded their voice in the Senate, With much voter discontent it is setback to President Obama and his triumphal victory.

Democrats were given significant losses, particularly in the House, where Republicans recorded a series of wins from New Hampshire to Virginia and Indiana to Florida, knocking out well-established incumbents.

Representative John A. Boehner, the House Republican leader, declared  his party had taken control of the House in a speech shortly before midnight Eastern time.

The American people’s voice was heard at the ballot box,” he said in declaring victory.

All across the states, Democratic incumbents like Senator Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas and Representatives Rick Boucher of Virginia, Baron P. Hill of Indiana and Alan Grayson of Florida fell to little-known Republican challengers.

Democrats struggled for positive signs in the House of Representatives as Democratic plans to increase voter turnout did not meet expectations, party strategists said, and extraordinary efforts that Mr. Obama made in the final days of the campaign appeared to have borne little fruit.

As the election results rolled in, with Republicans picking up victories shortly after polls closed in states across the South, East and the Midwest, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other party leaders made urgent appeals through television interviews that there was still time for voters in other states to cast their ballots.
