A well known British dealer bought a rare pink diamond for $46 million dollars at Sotheby’s auction at Geneva’s luxury Beau Rivage Hotel. The diamond trader Laurence Graff put in the bid by phone to buy the gem.

The 24.78 caret Pink diamond has been kept in a private collection for 60 years since it was last sold by a New York jeweler .
The sale surpassed expectation on what the rare pink diamond would bring and the bidding was fierce at the Sotheby’s auction.

David Bennett, the head of Sotheby‘s jewelry division said,” This is the highest price ever bid for a jewel at an auction. The pink diamond is described as having an emerald cut with gently rounded corners that has a soft sensual feel .Mr. Bennett said,” In the 35 years I’ve been doing this job I’ve only seen one or two diamonds like this as pink diamonds are extremely rare .” Imogene Foulkes a BBC correspondent said,” the diamond was a beautiful with a rosy pink color and sparkling allure.
A blue 35.56 caret diamond was the previous record price for a jewel at an auction. Other jewelry on sale at the auction belonged to Christina Onassas and Cristina Ford who was the wife of Henry Ford 11 ,grandson of the founder of the Ford Motor Company. There were 500 other lots on sale also .
