President Barack Obama made a surprise visit to Bagram air base near Kabul to praise and thank troops for their service during the holiday season.
He told the troops they are making crucial progress against insurgents and today we can be proud that there are fewer areas under Taliban control.
He also said there would be difficult days ahead in their fight against the Taliban and added,” You’re achieving your objectives, you will succeed in your mission.” The security team of the president is to report on the new strategy later this month.

Last year Mr. Obama ordered a troop surge in Afghanistan after a Pentagon report declared violence there was at an all time high. Also a year ago he announced at West Point Military academy the US would strengthen combat troops on Afghanistan with 30,000 reinforcements.

During his brief visit in Afghanistan the president had plans to have a face to face session with President Hamid Karzai in Kabul but the meeting had to be canceled due to too windy weather for the president to make the journey by helicopter but President Obama did speak to President Karzai for about 15 minutes by telephone.

The Wikileaks cables reported that Americans consider President Karzai weak, erratic and prone to believing paranoid conspiracy theories ,since to two presidents actually didn’t get together ,we don’t know how that topic would have been handled if they would have met in person.
