When fraudster Bernard Madoff was arrested two years ago the US marshals seized everything he owned All of the disgraced financier possessions and his wife’s belongings are being sold at a New York auction including his worn socks and monogrammed boxer shorts .The ballroom of a New York hotel was packed when the auction began in the morning .
Their was a variety of smaller cheaper items being sold by the US Marshals Service items ranging from socks to napkins watches and oil paintings. There were monogrammed slippers, hundreds of pairs of shoes, and a collection of pre-euro banknotes from European countries . The 19th Century bed with fabric hangings was the only bed the Madoffs had in their New York apartment and it sold for only a quarter of its pre-auction estimate.
The 10.5 caret diamond engagement ring belonging to Rut Madoff has
brought the highest price being $550,000.00
Among the winning bidders was amateur pianist John Rodger who bought a 1917 Steinway piano for $42,000 . He paid six times the minimum estimate value of the piano but he said,” I’ve got other pianos, but this one has history and it will make an interesting conversation piece “.
There will be one more auction in Florida of the couple’s belongings but this was the last sale in New York.
