Wearing a bomb sewn into his underwear last Christmas Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab attempted to blow up a airliner and has been arraigned on eight charged related to the alleged bombing plot .If convicted the 24 year old Nigerian faces life in prison. Among his previous charges were attempted murder of 290 jet passengers and attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction on December 25, 2009 . The federal grand jury indicted him on two new charges of conspiracy and possessing an explosive device for a terrorism plot.
The passengers overpowered Abdulmutallab on the flight to Detroit from Amsterdam after his attempt to set off explosives concealed in his underwear .In September the 24 year old fired his court appointed lawyers and failed to enter a plea on the new counts.
A plea of not guilty was entered by Judge Nancy Edmunds on his behalf, according to prosecutors.
The date Judge Edmunds said she would set for the trial would be at a hearing on January 12 .Mr. Abdulmutallab grew up in a wealthy family and had access to international travel and the best education. His father ,Alhaji Umaru Mutallab , is a prominent business man in Nigeria . The family had not heard from him since October and went to the US and Nigerian authorities in November to warn them about his son’s views .
