New York, New York (PRWEB) November 30, 2011
Urban Humanitarian Projects (UHP) ? through its Healthy Grenada program – has teamed up with Osbee Industries and Amerijet International to make generous donation to benefit the under-funded mental facility at Mt. Gay Hospital in Grenada. Healthy Grenada is a health-based initiative spearheaded by St. George?s University (SGU) students under UHP, a 501 c(3) charity. With support from the SGU administration, UHP was able to purchase and ship three shipping pallets full of supplies to the hospital, each weighing approximately 1500 pounds.
With 120 occupants living in tight quarters and supplied with minimal amenities, Mt. Gay Hospital is the only mental facility available to the people of Grenada, an island in the West Indies with a population of 104,487 and growing. St. George University medical students have had first-hand experience helping the patients at the sole mental hospital, but feel that further action needs to be taken to ensure that the patients experience quality healthcare.
Healthy Grenada initiative is headed by UHP?s team member, Natalie Rosenwasser, who coordinated with the hospital staff and organized the items for donation. Some of the items purchased for the hospital include basic necessities ranging from deodorant, toothpaste and shampoo to cutlery, shoes, clothes and even activities like sports equipment and board games.
?With all these fundamentals being supplied, the patients will begin to experience life on a better, richer level,? said Rosenwasser. ?We are very excited to be able to facilitate this major donation to these under-served individuals.?
Other donations came from Osbee Industries who supplied entertainment equipment for the patients. The items were purchased in New York, packaged onto shipping pallets and sent to Miami via Amerijet and to Grenada via SGU?s shipping containers. Amerijet and SGU generously offered free shipping on all donated items.
Rosenwasser and the president of Osbee Industries, Dave Raines, will be visiting Grenada in three weeks to meet with UHP’s special fundraising team at the university. The two teams will work closely with SGU administration to ensure that all items are cleared with customs and arrive safely at the hospital.
UHP?s donation to the hospital was made possible by generous contributions from students and faculty at SGU. A special fundraiser held at the university by UHP raised approximately $ 15,000 for the psychiatric hospital, which included a full match from SGU?s chancellor, Dr. Charles Modica. The pallets shipped this week contained approximately $ 9,000 worth of items. The remaining funds will be used to purchase and donate additional items in Grenada.
