Deutsche Bahn, the German railway train carried passengers for the first time in a test of the high speed train in the Channel Tunnel. Last week Deutsche Bahn sent one of its ICE-3 trains into the tunnel for a test but Saturday nights test was the first with passengers. For safety’s sake the long tunnel the trains are passing through must be long enough to enable people anywhere on board to leave in case of a malfunction or crisis and reach the emergency tunnel exits that exist. Access to the tunnel has been requested many times before by the German railway was able to carry passengers through the tunnel but the German firm saw an interest to widen competition.Services to Frankfort and Cologne hope to be up and running within the next three years.
The network is also interested in extending networks to different locations in Europe including service from Frankfort to Lyon and Marseilles in southern France. The French national railway SNCF have not yet approved the plans to begin the operation.Deutsche Bahn bought Arriva at the beginning of the year that company operates buses and trains across 12 European countries. Chiltern Railways and rail freight services in the UK is also run by Arriva.
Railway operations in the UK, France and Belgium are serviced by Eurostar a subsidiary line and was the only line to operate on the route. An order of new trains was placed to the German company Siemens creating an objection after Eurostars recent announcement of the order.The French firm Alston was the company France favored for the order of the new trains but Frances transport minister reported the order was null and void and said the rolling stocks made by Alston met safety standards.
