Food Shortage in US Households

Food shortage is the highest in US households since they have been collecting data in the 1990’s In 2009 almost 15% of households experienced a food shortage in their homes with single mothers being the hardest hit unable to put sufficient food on the table. More soup kitchens and community organizations that provide for the poor have felt the increased pressure the food insecurity has placed on them. .The US Department of Agriculture conducted the annual survey for the food security report. Government programs are eligible and could provide assistance to almost 60% of the people that are experiencing food shortage. The Obama administration has expanded the food stamp funding since the recession started in 2009 and around 34 million Americans each month use the food stamp program. Assuming that the problem of hunger would be alleviated when the recession ends is not true warned ,Jeannine Sanford, the Deputy for Washington DC food pantry Bread for the City, because there are some groups of people whose conditions are virtually unaffected by the bad economy. Washington DC has not yet been hit by the recession as other cities because of the many government jobs that employ people of that area
But the soup kitchens are sill struggling to keep up with demand with most of the people being the elderly, the disabled, or those in minimum wage jobs who live well below the poverty line.
