A portion of $100 bills creased during the printing, leaving 30 % 0f the notes with a blank patch on Benjamin Franklin’s face. The newly redesigned bill, printed on high quality cotton and linen stock, was the latest in a series of redesigned US currency intended to fight counterfeiting.

President Barack Obama’s Treasury secretary, Timothy Geithner, signature is also on the new bills. . The mistake in printing has forced the US to stockpile $110bn in new $100 bills until the flawed bill can be sorted and destroyed.

A mechanical process is being worked on to sort the bills otherwise it would take up to 30 years to go through the stockpile by hand ,officials said.

Treasury Department spokeswoman Darlene Anderson said,” We are confident that a very high proportion of the notes will be fit for circulation,” In February of 2011 is when the new high security notes were to begin circulating. The money, which stands for an estimated one tenth of the value of all US currency in circulation, is being held in US government facilities in Washington DC and in Ft Worth, in the state of Texas.
