President Obama has lifted the don’t ask, don’t tell ban and supports the move and will sign it into law ,now openly gay people are going to be allowed to serve in the military since the US senate has approved this legislation.

The don’t ask, don’t tellĀ  law that was made in 1993 that bans gay people in the military from revealing their sexual orientation was overturned 65-31 when the Senators voted.

The overturning of the don’t ash don’t tell bill was a key policy objective for Mr. Obama and the vote is a major victory ,the BBC’s Lain Mackenzie in Washington said. Opponents think that this new law can effect the troops moral at a time of war but earlier this month a Pentagon statement said allowing openly gay troops would have little impact on the cohesion on US forces fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A few moderate Republications joined the Democratic majority in favor of lifting this ban and want to approve the repeal before the start of a new Congress in January. An advocacy group Servicemembers Legal Defense network headed by Aubrey Sarvis said,”Until the president signs the bill, until there is certification, and until the 60 day Congressional period is over , no one should be investigated or discharged under this discriminatory law. ” The don’t ask don’t tellĀ  bill was passed when Bill Clinton was president and more than 13,000 service members have been dismissed
