Just days ahead of the first election in 20 years, an ongoing computer attack which is believed to have started on October 25 knocked Burma off the internet.
The closely watched national election that on November 7 will not allow international observers and foreign journalists into the country to cover the polls.
The internet’s attack is ongoing and has grown in the last few days to overwhelm the nation’s link to the net, said a security firm Arbor Networks.
There is a suspicion that Burma’s military authorities could be trying to restrict information over the election period, many believe the election is a scam designed to cement the military‘s grip on power, Sun Lloyd-Roberts reported from Burma
Aung San Suu Kyi’s National Legue for Democracy won in a landslide victory in the last elections in 1990 but the junta ignored the result and have remained in power ever since.
On Election Day the internet access still has a possibility of not working.
The exact reason for the disruption on the internet is not clear but Mr. Labovitz said that an analyst of similar events from the past found motives that ran the gamut from Government censorship, extortion, stock manipulation to politically motivated DDoS
