Connie Woodberry, director of Elevate in the United States and Regional Breakthroughs in Australia, has been a leader in community capacity building in Australia for a number of years and is bringing those capabilities to the US through the second annual Creating and Sustaining Special Places Symposium – A symposium for placemakers from the US and Australia.
Ms. Woodberry and her partner developed the Elevate Symposium series to make sure there is a serious opportunity for professional placemakers to meet to discuss the issues that affect all special places.
?Just imagine as you pack that RV and buy those airline tickets this summer that that long anticipated special place you are traveling to, the one that features on the photo stuck on the fridge, either as a place you have been or a place you long to go ? imagine that when you arrive at your special place the familiar campground is now a shopping center, the beach you have so longed to visit nearly inaccessible except through the lobby of a resort hotel.? Ms. Woodberry says. ?It is hard to define special places but one thing is certain – we know them when we see and experience them and we are always deeply affected when they are gone for there is a certainty about special places – once lost they are very rarely regained which is why we need placemakers who understand all of the elements to special places and are committed to sustaining them.?
Elevate LCC, in conjunction with Regional Breakthroughs Australia, is offering limited places to interested placemakers at The Elevate. Vail 2012, Creating and Sustaining Special Places Symposium taking place on the 25th to the 27th of September 2012 in Vail Colorado. The symposium will bring together the architects and environmentalists, town planners and builders, sustainability experts and others focused on understanding and protecting special places with three days of presentations, activities and discussions.
