The blizzards that swept along the eastern coast of US and Canada had the airport closed for hours forcing people to delay their plans to return home after the Christmas holiday. Many travelers spent the night sleeping at airports on the floor and in chairs hoping their flight would be able to take off but unfortunately the weather got worst overnight leaving piles of snow on the runways. Traveling by car was hazardous with the wind blowing snow into drifts and causing the roads to be un passable leaving stranded motorists to spend the cold night in their car waiting to be rescued by the road crews.
The New York residents were told by mayor Bloomsberg to refrain from travel after the city was blanketed with blowing heavy snow throughout the day and night with some areas receiving up to 20 inches of snow in the surrounding New York area . Among the other states that declared emergency’s were Massachusetts , Maine , Maryland , New Jersey, Virginia and North Carolina. In Nova Scotia 27,000 homes were left without power in the bitter cold and 11,000 consumers in New Brunswick when the storm reached Canada’s Atlantic coast early on Monday.
In New Brunswick the blizzard conditions had winds gusting up to 62 Miles per hour. The monster snow storm according to the US National Weather Service, was a result of a low pressure system that originated off North Carolina .
