Doctors repaired a tear in Mr. Holbrooke’s aorta and he is in critical condition , the aorta carries oxygenated blood from the heart and is the largest artery in the body .Mr. Holbrooke 69 ,was working at the State Department when he was taken ill and was admitted to the hospital.
His family is with him at the hospital in Washington DC where he had the surgery.
President Obama named him as US envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan He said to have clashed regularly with Afghan president Hamid Karzai and after disputed presidential elections in 2009 he spoke out about poll irregularities to Mr. Karzai. The Bosnian war ended after Mr. Holbrooke brokered the Dayton peace accords in 1995 and he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. President Bill Clinton named him as ambassador to the UN in 1997, having served in Vietnam and at the United Nations; he is one of the state department’s top diplomats.
On one of Obama’s foreign policy priorities Mr. Holbrooke had the plan was used by the administration. He has earned the reputation for confronting leaders to get them to come to the negotiating table and was nicknamed “the bulldozer.”
