Robert Gates, US Defense Secretary. told a joint press conference while meeting with Afghan President Hanid Karzai in Kabul on Wednesday. That he is convinced that the US strategy we are using in Afghanistan is working and we will be able to achieve key goals set out by President Obama that were made last year.
Mr. Gates visited US bases in Afghanistan for over two days and said the goal of pulling American troops out of major combat roles by 2014 could be met. General David Petraeus, the commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan said that he might advise President Obama to delay the exit plans he had set for July 2011 as the date to begin withdrawing forces from Afghanistan. .
The security situation had improved for the NATO and Afghan forces but they still were experiences a significant number of casualties. But there is no denying the security climate has improved and in the last 12 months and we‘ve come a long way ,making progress that even in just the last few months has exceeded my expectations, Mr. Gates said . “The sacrifices of Afgan and the coalition troops are achieving greater safety and security for both our nations,” he added.
