An explosion at the luxury hotel Grand Riviera Princess on Mexico’s Caribbean coast killed five Canadians and two of the hotel’s employees plus injured fifteen other people. Among the dead reported is one child .
Two US citizens and Mexican workers are less injured but two Canadian tourists are reported to be in critical conditions.
The blast blew out windows at the 676 room hotel and scattered debris over a wide area. The floor of the hotel was blasted through the ceiling by the force of the explosion ,Quintana Roo state prosecutor Francisco Alor reported .
The blast .is believed to have been caused by a build up of an accumulation of natural gas. produced by decomposing organic material in the subsoil, and this gas caused the explosion according to a report .It will have to be determined by expert examiners and civil defense personnel if the underground space filled with swampy water that remained in this zone could have generated this type of gases where the hotel was constructed four years ago .
The hotel complex is located in an area known as the Maya Riviera which is about 90 miles from Cancun. Many of the guests were Canadian tourists staying at the hotel complex.
The hotel sits on a concrete platform on a swampy area near the beach. An investigation was to start accord to local media to see if the hotel had been properly built.
