Microsoft Corp. announced Wednesday it will donate more than $1 million to the Mendez Learning Center in Los Angeles to help bridge the technology gap in this traditionally underserved community.

“We believe students can do amazing things when they have access to the right technology, tools and training,” Anthony Salcito, a Microsoft vice president, said in a statement.

“It is our hope that we can inspire the next generation of leaders to see the opportunity to compete for better jobs and improve their economic status by pursuing interests and careers in science, technology, engineering and math,” he added.

The nonprofit was created by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the Los Angeles Unified School District to turn around the city’s lowest-performing schools.

The grant will help provide new software for all 420 computers on campus and new hardware, including seven laptops for teachers.

This generous grant from Microsoft will give students a chance to expand their learning skills.
