Fran Crippen a 26 years old swimmer from Philadelphia who comes from a family of prominent swimmers and was with the U.S.National team, died during an open water race in the United Arab Emirates.
When Crippen failed to finish a search was conducted and they found his body two hours later about 400 meters from the finish line. An autopsy has been completed but the results have not yet become public.
There is a question as to weather the water and air temperature was too high to safely hold a swimming competition. The race organizers and have been criticized by Thomas Lurz of Germany, staying that the schedule was too grueling and conditions were too hot for racing safely that day and it put the swimmers at risk.
A swimming 15km open water event that was to be held at the same location on Wednesday was canceled by the swimming officials after Crippen’s death.
